Weaver Dunes

Description

One of the most unique landscapes in S.E. Minnesota is the Weaver Dunes Scientific and Nature Area, near Kellogg. A remarkable mosaic of habitats exists within a relatively small area around the confluence of the Zumbro and Mississippi rivers. This sand terrace, 10 miles long and three miles wide, formed by deposits from glacial melting, supports sand prairie, savanna and woodland communities.  The American Museum of Natural History calls this dune region the most important place in the United States for Blanding’s turtles.
